I took my computer outside this morning and worked on the balcony,
making the most of the Indian Summer. This caught my attention.
Caught is not the word. Gripped me, more like. It's best seen
magnified (if only I had put my camera on the highest setting).
Name me any piece of architecture that is more beautiful, complex
than this.
There's a massive struggle going on, with the few remaining wasps
seeking any food they can find. Specimens like this are not likely
to last, I fear.
For more about the evolution of spider webs, see Richard Dawkins's
'Climbing Mount Improbable'.
Great shot, and great sensitivity too. Most people would take a
broom and swipe the damn thing off the balcony.
Atthis time of year our front porch has these beautiful webs in
every nook and cranny and the spiders are so fat they look as if
they are about to burst! I just leave them alone; I only kill
mosquitoes and hornets if I have to.
