About

A trip to the 'Lost Gardens Of Helygon.' It Is in Cornwall, nere Truro and down the road from the 'Eden Project.'
The Gardens were started in Victorian times and employed many local Lads to cultivate and maintain the huge area of flowers and vegitable plots. When the 1914-18 Great War started, all the young, local workers were obliged to leave their work in the gardens to fight as Soldiers in France. Not one of these vital young men returned after the war it was assumed they were all killed in France. Consequently, the gardens of Helygon fell into disrepair and very quickly became overgrown by tall grass and ground elder.
In the 1960s it was reopened to cultivation and restored to the Former glory that had been 'Lost' for so many years.
In a small red brick shed that they uncoverd in the grounds was found a large peice of slate with the names of the former gardeners before the Great War in 1914. The names are now preserved under glass in that shed.

Ah Rose, Mother told me, no matter how many times you hear something. Always act as though it's the first time you heard it. He! He!

I do not know weather it is generally known but youg men who refused to fight in the Great War were usually sent white feathers of cowardice through the post.
